FIGALIA ( NEA )
ILIA - PELOPONNESE GREECE
In the delightful town of Figalia ( Nea ), you will find one of the best preserved ancient temples in all of Greece. The temple of Epikourios Apollo.
This stunning temple was built by the architectect Iktinos in around 420 b.c.
After the completion of the magestic Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens,
the Athenians sent Iktinosto to exile in Figalia. This was so that he wouldnt create another magnificent temple to rival the beauty of Parthenon.
However, Iktinos secretely built this temple in the Doric style, and also including elements of the Corinthian style, which was the first showcase of such a design in Greece.
Figalia is a wonderful town to visit, and the temple, as well as some of the other ruins of ancient sites found here are well worth visiting.
Today, the temple is actually presevred in a special tent, that is protecting it against the elements. Though enclosed, the temple still retains is beauty and inspiration, and this is a stop that all visitors to the county of Ilia should make.
