AMALIADA
ILIA - PELOPONNESE GREECE
Amaliada is the second biggest city in the municipality of Ilia, and was actually named after the "Queen Amalia", who was very impressed by its beauty
when
she visited the area. The town is easily accessible and has a good connection with the city of Athens, Pyrgos and other villages in Ilia, with the KTEL bus netword, and the OSE train network.
A little further out of the city, next to the citys boarding school, is the historical church of Fragovilla.
The church is very impressive, with its architecture, and was actually built in the shape of a cross, and has a large dome and very impressive frescoes and icons.
Also of interest, next to the village "Vournagos" is the monastery of Agios Nikolaos, known as the monastery of the Frank Jump ( Fragopidimatos ).
According to the traditional myth, it took its name by a Frank who was chased. In that dangerous moment he prayed to Saint Nikolaos and jumped from the top of the mountain with his horse. He landed safely, without a scratch. The tracks from his horse are still visible from the point of which he jumped.
At a 2 km distance from Amaliada is the beautiful beach of Kourouta, which is also home to the municipal camping facility which has 250 camping spots. ( 26220 - 28543, 27312, 24481 ).
In Amaliada many cultural events and festivals take place each year, with the emphasis on classical music. The city has a very famous chorus and dance group.
